The main advantage of razor slitting is the simple setup process as well as their inexpensive replacement cost. Razor slitting can be done two ways: an ‘in air’ configuration, or in a ‘grooved roller’ configuration to support the web during slitting.
Shear is the most versatile slitting method. It can be used for a wide variety of papers, films, laminates and foils. Shear slitting variations can be ‘tangential/kiss’ or ‘wrap’ shear which involves a spring loaded male blade against a female ring, creating a scissoring effect to slit the web. Shear slitting typically provides the highest quality edge, lowest dust and longest blade life.
Score or ‘crush cutting’ is commonly used for adhesives and certain papers. The score knife is a pneumatically loaded circular blade that sits against a hardened steel anvil. The knife then crushes the web against the anvil. Crush cutting provides quick and easy setup since there is only one holder to position.
